The boxes less than 100mm diameter are endgrain. The wood grain runs vertically in the box which enables delicate finials and fine detailing. Each has a suction-fit lid fitting over the base, so you feel slight air pressure as the lid goes on, and the suck of a vacuum as the lid comes off. You need both hands to open these boxes so most are less than 75mm diameter.
The larger boxes are cross-grained with the grain running across the diameter of the box. Each has a loose in-fitting lid that can be lifted with one hand whilst the other scrabbles around in the base.
The inspiration for these boxes ranges from humble African grain stores to ancient fortresses ,mosques, and the occasional haystack and Victorian fire-hydrant. Groups can be rearranged to form different sculptural entities.
